# Customize website themes

Create, duplicate, import from git, edit, and delete your own HTML and CSS website themes.

Use this task to build your own theme for the podcast website or the network website. A theme is a set of HTML template files and CSS files that you edit in the theme editor. You cannot edit Podigee themes, but you can duplicate one and edit the copy.

## Before you start

* A theme belongs to the account that creates it. Only that account can edit it.
* Network themes need networks, which are available on Pro and above, or on an older plan that includes them.
* To import a theme from git, the repository must be public.
* Know HTML and CSS. The templates use the Liquid template language.

{% tab title="Classic view" %}

### Create a theme

1. Open the user menu and select **Themes**.
2. Select **Add theme** for a podcast website theme, or **Add network theme** for a network website theme.
3. Enter the theme title.
4. Save.

![The Themes page with the buttons Add theme and Import theme from git repo, the empty list Your themes, and the list Podigee themes](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-66302cda8103385cac7bc7b1e60eb72ea0066012%2Fdoc-hosting-010-classic-themes-page.png?alt=media)

The Themes page starts a new theme, imports one from git, and lists your themes and the Podigee themes.

A new podcast theme contains the standard files `archive.html`, `about.html`, `index.html`, `layout.html`, `show.html`, `imprint.html`, `privacy.html`, and `application.css`. A new network theme contains `podcasts.html`, `about.html`, `index.html`, `layout.html`, `podcast.html`, `imprint.html`, `privacy.html`, and `application.css`. You cannot delete standard files.

### Start from a Podigee theme

1. In **Themes**, go to **Podigee themes**.
2. Duplicate the theme you want to start from. Podigee creates a private copy named "\[title] Clone" under **Your themes** with all its files.

This list contains only editable Podigee themes. It does not contain the current Podigee themes with the color picker.

### Import a theme from a git repository

1. In **Themes**, select **Import theme from git repo**.
2. Enter the **Repository URL (git)** and the **Repository Branch**. The page notes: "Only public git repos are supported."
3. Confirm. To import again later, confirm the warning "Are you sure, you want to re-import all files? The existing files will be deleted or overridden!"

![The page New Theme for the import from a git repository with the fields Title, Repository URL (git), and Repository Branch, and the button Add theme](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-0f12f2a7fe2ac300a8d9f343909994b96d343740%2Fdoc-hosting-010-classic-import-from-git.png?alt=media)

The import form takes the title, the public repository address, and the branch.

### Edit the template files

1. In **Your themes**, open the theme.
2. Open a file to edit it, or add a new `.html` or `.css` file. Each file name must be unique within the theme.
3. Save each file.
4. Optional: define variants as a comma-separated list. Each variant needs a file named `<variant>.css`. You cannot remove a variant that a website uses.

### Use and delete a theme

1. Open the podcast, select the **Blog** tab, and select your theme under **Theme**. For a network, use the **Website** tab of the network.
2. To delete a theme, open it in **Themes** and delete it. Websites that use the theme fall back to the default Podigee theme.

### Expected result

The website renders your templates. After a change, reload the website to see it. After you delete a theme, Podigee shows "The theme was successfully deleted."

### If you cannot complete the task

* "File \[name] belongs to public theme!": you tried to edit a Podigee theme. Duplicate it first.
* "You are not allowed to edit this theme.": the theme belongs to another account.
* "The theme could not be imported - please check the URL of the repository.": the repository is not public, or the address or branch is wrong.
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Podigee workspace" %}
In the Podigee workspace you choose the theme of the podcast website in the **Look** section of the **Website** tab. The list shows the Podigee themes and the private themes of the podcast owner account. The workspace does not include the theme editor. To create, duplicate, import from git, edit, or delete a theme, use the classic view. Network themes and network websites are also only in the classic view.

### Complete the task

1. Open the podcast and select **Reach** under **Publish** in the sidebar. The **Feeds** tab opens.
2. In the **Your website** card, select the **Website** tab.
3. Go to the **Look** section of the form.
4. Under **Theme**, select the theme. Each option shows "Podigee theme" or "Private theme" below its title.
5. Select **Save website**.

![The Website tab of Reach in the Podigee workspace with the Look section, the Theme list with two Podigee themes, and the Main color field](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-e5da2e2baf7f72a73eebe7d26aef32438fd24340%2Fdoc-hosting-010-website-theme-picker.png?alt=media)

The Theme list in the Look section shows the themes that the podcast can use, each with its type.

### Expected result

* Podigee shows "Website settings saved." and opens the **Website** tab again.
* Every page of the podcast website uses the selected theme. Reload the website to see the change.
* The **Main color** field follows the saved theme. A theme without a main color shows "The saved theme does not use a main color." in its place.
* When you save the theme that the website already uses, Podigee changes nothing.

### If you cannot complete the task

* The **Look** section shows no **Theme** list: only one theme is available for this podcast. The podcast owner can create or duplicate a theme in the classic view.
* "This theme is not available for this show.": the selected theme is not in the list of the podcast owner account. Select a theme from the list again.
* "The website settings were not saved.": another field of the form has an error. The notice lists each error, and the field shows its own message. Correct the field and select **Save website** again. The form keeps your entries.
* "The website settings could not be saved. Try again.": Podigee did not save the settings. Select **Save website** again.
* "You can see these settings, but you cannot change them for this show.": you cannot edit this podcast. The **Theme** row shows the current theme. Ask the podcast owner for the permission.
* "This show has no Podigee website, so there is nothing to set up here.": the podcast has no Podigee website, so it has no theme to choose.
* "This show forwards its website to \[address].": the website sends visitors to another address, and the tab has no form. The workspace cannot change this. Choose the website mode in the classic view, see [Set up the podcast website](/documentation/create-and-publish/hosting-and-management/set-up-the-podcast-website.md).
* Podigee shows "Show not found." and opens the start page of the workspace: the podcast is not one of the podcasts that you can edit.
* You want to change the HTML or CSS of a theme, or import a theme from git: the workspace does not do this. Use the classic view.
  {% endtab %}
  {% endtabs %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.podigee.com/documentation/create-and-publish/hosting-and-management/customize-website-themes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
