# Edit podcast information

Change title, description, web address, categories, locations, and alias in the General tab.

Use this task to change the information that describes your podcast in podcast apps, directories, and on the podcast website. The **General** tab saves most changes automatically.

## Before you start

* You must be the owner of the podcast, or an organization member with the permission to edit podcast information. Other viewers see the tab in read-only mode.
* The podcast must not be in its first import. While the import runs, the podcast is read-only.
* If you want to change the web address, change it before you publish the podcast. See [Change the web address](#change-the-web-address) for the effects.

{% tab title="Classic view" %}

### Edit the general fields

1. Open the podcast and select the **General** tab ("General information about your podcast").
2. Change the fields you need:
   * **Title** and **Authors**: up to 255 characters each.
   * **Description**: the long text that podcast apps show.
   * **Subtitle**: up to 255 characters.
   * **Keywords**: enter a keyword and select **Add**. With more than 10 keywords the tab shows "Because of SEO, we recommend using 10 or less tags at once." SEO stands for search engine optimization.
   * **Email**: the contact address that the feed shows. If the field is empty, the feed shows the email address of your account.
   * **Link to website**: an `http://` or `https://` address of up to 2000 characters.
   * **Copyright**.
   * **Publication type**: **Episodic** or **Serial**. You cannot change the type after the podcast is published.
   * **Episodes numbers in feed** (episodic podcasts only): select **Enable** to add the episode number tag to the feed. The warning reads "By enabling, you activate the distribution of the <itunes:episode> tag in a RSS feed."
   * **Language**.
   * **Explicit language**: select **This podcast contains explicit content** when it applies.
3. Wait for the label **Autosaved**, or select **Save**.

![The General tab with the fields Keywords, Email, Link to website, Copyright, Subtitle, Publication type, Episodes numbers in feed, Category 1, Category 2, Language, and Explicit language](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-3120b6eaa54653842a927de1e1cabf0ad0982527%2Fdoc-hosting-003-classic-general-fields.png?alt=media)

The General tab holds the descriptive fields of the podcast in one form.

### Choose the categories

1. In the **General** tab, select **Category 1**. The placeholder reads **Select up to 3 categories**.
2. Optional: select **Category 2** and **Category 3**. Each select appears after you set the previous one. A category that is already selected is disabled in the other selects.
3. Select **Remove category** to clear a selection. A podcast needs at least one category.

The feed lists each category. The feed nests a sub-category under its parent category.

### Add locations

Locations describe where you record the podcast or what place it is about. They appear in the feed as location tags.

1. In the **General** tab, go to **Locations** and select **Add location**.
2. In the **Add Location** dialog, use **Search location** to find the place, or enter a **Custom name** of up to 128 characters.
3. Select the kind: **Podcast is recorded at this location** or **Podcast is about this location**.
4. Save the dialog. Repeat for up to 10 locations. At 10 locations the button is disabled and the tab shows "Maximum 10 locations allowed".

![The Add Location dialog with the field Search location, a map, the field Custom name, the select Location kind, and the buttons Confirm and Cancel](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6abe05a98d8c6fb5a8ad6987e15f33aea2c1182c%2Fdoc-hosting-003-classic-add-location.png?alt=media)

The Add Location dialog takes a search term or a custom name and the location kind.

The dialog reminds you: "Consider your personal privacy when disclosing your home address."

### Change the web address

The field **Name (subdomain)** is the first field of the **General** tab. It sets the address of the podcast website and of the default feeds: `<name>.podigee.io`.

1. Enter the new name. Use only letters, digits, and dashes, up to 50 characters. The names `www`, `api`, `support`, `blog`, `developer`, `dev`, `podigee`, `podcast`, `podcasts`, and `files` are not available. Podigee stores the name in lowercase.
2. Check the live address preview below the field.
3. Wait for **Autosaved**, or select **Save**.

Do not change the web address of a published podcast. The tab warns: "You should not change the subdomain of your podcast once it has been published!" The old address is part of the feed address that podcast apps and directories use.

### Set a podcast alias

An alias is an internal name that Podigee shows in your lists instead of the web address. The field **Podcast alias** appears on the **Podcast settings** tab only when your account has more than two podcasts.

1. Open the **Podcast settings** tab.
2. Enter the alias of up to 255 characters.
3. Save.

### Expected result

The **General** tab shows **Autosaved** after each change. The podcast website and the feed show the new values. A change of title, description, or language also updates a connected YouTube video show.

### If you cannot complete the task

* The tab is read-only: you do not have the permission to edit the podcast, or the podcast is in its first import. Ask the podcast owner, or wait until the import finishes.
* The tab shows a save error: check the length rules above and that the website link starts with `http://` or `https://`.
* Podigee does not accept the web address: the name is reserved, already in use, or contains a character other than letters, digits, and dashes.
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Podigee workspace" %}
In the Podigee workspace you edit the show details on the page **Edit show details.** You change the web address on the **Website** tab of **Reach**. You set the episode numbers in the feed on the **Feed & redirects** page of the settings. The workspace does not include the locations and the donation links. Use the classic view for these settings.

The page opens only for a show that you can edit. For other shows, the workspace opens the start page and shows **Show not found.**

### Edit the general fields

1. Open the podcast and select **Settings** in the sidebar.
2. On the **Show details** card, select **Edit details**.
3. On the page **Edit show details.**, change the fields you need:
   * **Name and description**: **Show title** (up to 255 characters), **Subtitle**, **Description** (up to 4000 characters), and **Keywords**. Use **Improve title**, **Rewrite**, or **Shorten** for a Podigee AI suggestion.
   * **Categories and listening order**: **Language**, the categories, and the **Show type** (**Episodic (newest first)** or **Serial (from the beginning)**). Under **Explicit content**, select **No explicit content** or **Contains explicit content**.
   * **Credits and feed contact**: **Author and feed owner name**, **Feed contact email**, **Copyright notice**, and **Website link**. If **Feed contact email** is empty, the feed shows the email address of the podcast owner.
4. To set a subtitle, enter it in **Subtitle**. The hint reads "A short line that some podcast apps show under the title. Up to 255 characters." The field accepts no more than 255 characters.
5. To add a keyword, enter it in the field **Add a keyword**. Then press Enter or type a comma. The keyword shows as a pill. The hint reads "Words that help people find your show in search. Use up to 10."
   * The counter below the field shows how many keywords you have. At 10 keywords the field is disabled.
   * To remove a keyword, select **Remove keyword** on its pill.
   * Podigee removes spaces at the start and at the end of each keyword. It also removes empty and duplicate keywords.
6. To link the website of your show outside Podigee, enter the full address in **Website link**, for example `https://www.example.com`. The hint reads "The website of your show outside Podigee. Your RSS feed links to it."
   * The address must start with `http://` or `https://`, followed by the host name.
   * The address can have up to 2000 characters.
   * To remove the link, clear the field.
7. Select **Save details**.

![The Edit show details page in the Podigee workspace with the section Name and description and the fields Show title, Subtitle, and Description](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-f8f79bd34d32d57135601a705d8d0f5b3f7bfa33%2Fdoc-hosting-003-details-extended.png?alt=media)

The Subtitle field sits below the show title, with its hint and a character counter.

The episode numbers in the feed are not on this page. See [Manage podcast feeds](/documentation/create-and-publish/hosting-and-management/manage-podcast-feeds.md).

### Choose the categories

1. On the page **Edit show details.**, select the **Primary category**. The empty option reads **No category selected**.
2. Optional: select the **Second category (optional)** and the **Third category (optional)**. The three selects are visible at once. A podcast needs one to three different categories.
3. Select **No category selected** to clear a selection.
4. Select **Save details**.

### Change the web address

The **Website link** is the address of your own website. It is not your Podigee web address. Below **Website link**, the page shows "Your Podigee web address is set under Website in Reach." The page **Edit show details.** does not change the web address.

1. On the page **Edit show details.**, select the link **Website in Reach**. The **Website** tab of **Reach** opens.
2. Change the web address there. For the steps and the effects of a change, see [Set up the podcast website](/documentation/create-and-publish/hosting-and-management/set-up-the-podcast-website.md).

### Set a podcast alias

An alias is a short name that stands in for the web address of the podcast in your lists. The **Alias** card is active only when your account has more than two podcasts.

1. In **Settings**, on the **Advanced** card, select **Open advanced**.
2. On the **Alias** card, enter the alias of up to 255 characters. Leave it empty to use the web address.
3. Select **Save**.

![The Alias card on the Advanced settings page with the Save button](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-ec085cd3f8afb9f08db49820b013356924266b35%2Fdoc-hosting-003-alias.png?alt=media)

The Alias card stands in for the show address wherever two shows have to be told apart.

### Expected result

After **Save details**, the **Settings** page opens and shows **Show details saved.** The podcast website and the feed show the new values. After **Save**, the **Alias** card shows **Alias saved.**

### If you cannot complete the task

* The page shows **Show details could not be saved**: read the message under it.
  * **Choose one to three different available categories.** means that two selects hold the same category.
  * **Choose a supported show language.** means that the language is not available.
  * **Enter a full web address that starts with http\:// or https\://.** means that the **Website link** is not a full web address, or that it has more than 2000 characters. Correct the address, or clear the field.
  * **Your keywords are too long. Remove some keywords or make them shorter.** means that one keyword has more than 255 characters, or that all keywords together have 1000 or more characters. Remove some keywords, or make them shorter.
* The field **Add a keyword** is disabled: the show has 10 keywords. Remove a keyword before you add a new one.
* The workspace opens the start page and shows **Show not found.**: the show is not available to you, or you cannot edit it. Ask the podcast owner.
* You leave the page with unsaved changes: the dialog **Unsaved changes on this page** opens. Select **Go back to them**, or **Leave without saving**.
* The **Alias** card shows **An alias becomes available once you have more than two shows.**: the alias is not available yet.
* The **Alias** card shows **Only a show administrator can change this.**: ask the podcast owner.
* You need the **Locations**: they are not available in the workspace. Switch to the classic view.
* You need donation links: they are not on this page. See [Add donation links](/documentation/create-and-publish/hosting-and-management/add-donation-links.md).

What is different:

* There is no autosave. Select **Save details** to keep a change.
* The three category selects are shown at once. Clear one with **No category selected**.
* The workspace stops at 10 keywords. The classic view shows a warning above 10 keywords, but it saves more.
* The web address is on the **Website** tab of **Reach**, not on the page with the show details.
* The episode numbers in the feed are on the **Feed & redirects** page of the settings, not on the page with the show details.
* The alias is on the **Advanced** settings page and has its own **Save**.
  {% endtab %}
  {% endtabs %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.podigee.com/documentation/create-and-publish/hosting-and-management/edit-podcast-information.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
