# Create video and audio clips

Cut short clips from a video or audio episode with Clipper, then export and download the MP4 file.

Use this task to cut short, shareable clips from an episode with Clipper. You can start from AI suggestions, or you can set the start and end time yourself. You choose a vertical, square, or horizontal format and export the clip as an MP4 file.

## Before you start

* You need Content Hub access. See [Get started with Content Hub](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/content-hub/get-started-with-content-hub.md).
* Your plan must include social clips. Every clip that you create counts against your monthly social clips allowance. The allowance depends on your plan. See [Understand plans and what they include](/documentation/connect-and-administer/account-and-team/understand-plans-and-what-they-include.md).
* The episode needs an uploaded audio or video file. Video formats need the episode video. Clips from audio episodes also need the podcast cover image.

## Choose a format

The classic view offers these formats:

| **Vertical Video**   | 9:16         | 5 to 180 seconds, recommended 30 | 5 to 120 seconds |
| **Square Video**     | 1:1          | Not available                    | 5 to 120 seconds |
| **Horizontal Video** | 16:9         | 5 to 180 seconds, recommended 60 | 5 to 120 seconds |

For an audio episode, Clipper composes a video from the podcast cover image, the episode title, and an animated waveform over the selected audio segment. Square is available for audio episodes only.

The Podigee workspace uses different format names. Its tab below lists them.

### Before you start in the classic view

* If your plan has no social clips allowance, Clipper shows **Social Clips aren't part of your plan yet** with the button **See plans**.
* Optional: set a brand briefing in [Set brand guardrails](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/content-hub/set-brand-guardrails.md). Clipper shows **Brand briefing active** when one exists.

On a plan without a social clips allowance, Clipper shows the plan notice with See plans instead of the clip tools.

### Let Clipper suggest clips

1. In the sidebar, select **Clipper**, then **Create New Clip**. You can also open a video card such as **Vertical Video Clips** on the Content Hub home page.
2. Select the episode. The list shows the 50 newest episodes with a processed media file.
3. Optional: enter **Custom instructions**.
4. Select **Find Best Clips**.
5. If the page shows **Preparing episode content...**, wait. Podigee prepares the episode content in the background and continues when it is ready.
6. Review the suggestions. Each suggestion shows a title, **Why this clip:**, a confidence percentage, the spoken text, and a clip type. The clip type is, for example, Teaser, Insight, Summary, Call to Action, Hook, Quote, Educational, or Controversial. Clipper returns 1 to 5 suggestions, 3 by default.
7. Accept a suggestion to save it as a clip.

### Set the clip times yourself

1. On the new clip page, select **Create clip manually**.
2. Play the episode. Use **Set clip start at current time** and **Set clip end at current time**, or type the **Start time** and **End time** such as `1:30`. **Skip back 5 seconds** helps you find the exact moment.
3. Save the clip. The page notes **Preview only. The final clip is rendered on export.**

Manual clips do not use AI. The end time must be after the start time. Otherwise Clipper shows **End time must be after start time**.

### Adjust the framing of a video clip

1. Open the clip and select **Edit Framing**.
2. Select **Add Keyframe Here** at the moments where you want the crop to change. To delete a keyframe, right-click it.
3. Save the framing.

If you change the start or end time of an exported clip, Clipper removes the old export. You must export the clip again.

### Export and download the clip

1. Open the clip. The page shows **Platform**, **Duration**, **Timecode**, **Aspect Ratio**, **Clip Type**, **Why This Clip**, and **Spoken Text**.
2. Select **Export Video**. The status moves from **Queued for export...** to **Rendering video...** to **Export complete!**.
3. Select **Download**. The file is an MP4 named after the clip title. Clipper renders video clips with automatic speaker framing.
4. To render again after a change, select **Re-export Video**.

You can also **Approve** the clip, **Copy Info**, or **Delete** it after you confirm **Are you sure you want to delete this clip?**.

### Expected result

The clip appears in the Clipper list and in the content pack of the episode. The list shows 20 clips per page and offers the filters **All platforms**, **All statuses**, **Newest first**, and **Oldest first**. The counter **Clips left** shows how many clips remain in the current allowance period.

### Your monthly allowance

* Every clip that you save counts. This includes clips from a suggestion and clips with manual times.
* A deleted clip still counts for the current period.
* When you have used the complete allowance, Clipper shows **You've used all your clips this month** with the reset date and the button **See plans**.
* You can still open, download, and delete clips that were exported earlier, even when no clips are left.

### If you cannot complete the task

* **Export failed** appears: select **Re-export Video**.
* **No source video available for this episode.** appears: the episode has no video file. Use a vertical or horizontal audio clip instead, or upload the video first.
* **The exported video is not available yet.** appears: the export still runs. Wait for **Export complete!**.
* **This clip is already being exported.** appears: wait for the running export to finish.
* The export of a clip from an audio episode fails: check that the podcast has a cover image.

In the Podigee workspace, you create clips on the **Create clips** page of an episode. On this page you get clip suggestions, create a clip from a moment that you know, render the clip, and download it. The workspace does not include the framing editor, **Approve**, **Copy Info**, the list of all clips with its filters, the content packs, and the brand briefing. Use the classic view for these. You also cannot add a recording, recover a failed content preparation, or change your plan in the workspace. The **See plans** button opens the plan page of the classic view.

The plan of the account owner decides if you can create clips, also when you are a team member. An organization member other than the owner or an admin also needs the organization permission **Content Hub**. The owner or an admin gives this permission in the classic view.

### Open the clip tool

1. Open the episode and go to the **Amplify** section. The section shows **Amplify this episode**. You can also select **Repurpose: \[episode title]** on the **Overview** page. This quick action opens the section of the current draft or of the latest published episode.
2. Optional: read the **Get started** card with the title **How the tools work**. To remove the card, select **Hide introduction**. The card stays hidden for you on all shows and episodes. You cannot show it again.
3. On the **Create clips** card, select **Open tool**. The card shows the pill **Ready** when you can use the tool. The **Create clips** page opens.
4. Look at the pill in the **Find moments** card:
   * **Content ready**: continue with the next task.
   * **Preparing content** or **Content queued**: wait. Reload the page later.
   * **Content needed**: select **Prepare episode content**.
   * **Recording needed**: the episode has no recording. Add a recording in the classic view.

The **Find moments** and **Create clip** buttons stay available when the content is not ready. A request before the pill shows **Content ready** can fail.

The Create clips page shows the readiness pill in the Find moments card and your clips in the Your clips list.

### Let the workspace suggest clips

1. In **Clip format**, select a format:
   * An episode without video offers **Vertical audiogram**, **Square audiogram**, and **Horizontal audiogram**.
   * An episode with video also offers **Vertical video**, **Square video**, and **Horizontal video**.
   * The aspect ratio is 9:16 for vertical, 1:1 for square, and 16:9 for horizontal.
2. In **Number of suggestions**, select 1 to 5 clips. The default is 3.
3. Optional: in **What should the clips focus on?**, name the audience or a topic.
4. Select **Find moments**. The button shows **Finding moments**. This usually takes less than one minute.
5. Read the suggestions under **Review suggestions**. Each suggestion shows a title and the start and end time of the moment. The suggestions are proposals. Check each moment before you create a clip.
6. Optional: change the **Clip title** of a suggestion.
7. Select **Create clip** to save the suggestion as a clip. To remove a suggestion, select **Dismiss**.

### Create a clip from a known moment

1. Go to the card **Create a clip from a known moment**.
2. If the episode has video, select **Video** or **Audiogram**.
3. Enter the **Clip title**.
4. Select the **Clip format**.
5. Drag on the waveform to select the moment. You can also type the **Start time** and the **End time**, for example `1:30`. The end time must be after the start time.
6. Select **Create clip**.

### Render and download the clip

1. Find the clip under **Your clips**. A new clip shows the status **Ready to render**.
2. Optional: select **Preview** to play the moment.
3. Select **Render clip**. The status changes to **Queued**, then to **Rendering**, then to **Ready**. The list updates automatically.
4. Select **Download**. The file is an MP4 file with the name of the clip title.
5. To remove a clip, select **Remove**. If the card shows no **Remove** button, open **More actions** first. The dialog says "This removes the clip and the file it rendered. It still counts toward this month's clip allowance." Select **Remove** to confirm.

### Expected result

* Podigee shows "Clip saved." The clip appears under **Your clips** with the status **Ready to render**. The clip also appears under **Created from this episode** in the **Amplify** section.
* After you select **Render clip**, Podigee shows "Clip rendering started." A rendered clip shows **Ready** and the **Download** button.
* A dismissed suggestion shows "Suggestion dismissed." A removed clip shows "Clip removed."
* When your plan has a monthly clip limit, the **Get started** card shows "Clips this month: \[remaining] of \[included] left. The allowance resets on \[date]." A plan without a limit shows no line. After **Hide introduction**, the line is not visible.
* Every clip that you create in the period counts, also a removed clip.

### If you cannot complete the task

Access to the tool:

* The **Create clips** card shows **Not available**, "Your plan does not include clips." and "Upgrade to create them.": your plan does not include clips. The other tools can still show **Ready**. Select **See plans** to change the plan. When you open the page directly, it shows the same text with the link **See plans**.
* "This account's plan does not include clips." with "\[owner] decides the plan." or "The account owner decides the plan.": the plan of the account owner does not include clips. Select **Ask \[owner]** or **Ask the show owner** to write to the account owner. When the owner has no email address, no button shows.
* "You do not have access to clips." with "\[owner] can give you access." or "The account owner can give you access.": you do not have the organization permission **Content Hub**, or Content Hub does not work on this show. Select **Ask \[owner]** or **Ask the show owner**. As a collaborator on the show of a different account, you get no button. Ask the show owner directly.
* The card shows **Not available yet** and "We are still building this": the tool is not open for your account yet.
* The **Amplify** section shows no tool cards: your account has no subscription.

Episode content:

* "Episode content is needed" and "Prepare this episode before creating clips.": select **Prepare episode content**. Podigee shows "The episode content is being prepared. This can take a few minutes."
* "Episode content is being prepared" and "Come back when preparation has finished.": wait, then reload the page.
* "Episode content is queued" and "Come back when preparation has started.": wait, then reload the page.
* "A recording is needed" and "Add a recording before creating clips.": add a recording to the episode in the classic view.
* "The episode content is already being prepared.": the preparation runs. Wait.
* "The episode content is ready.": continue with the task.
* "You cannot prepare content for this episode.": your plan or your access does not include the tool. Look at the **Create clips** card for the reason.
* "Add a recording to this episode first.": the episode has no recording. Add one in the classic view.
* The page shows **Preparing content** for a long time, and **Prepare episode content** shows "The episode content is already being prepared.": the preparation can have failed. The workspace does not start it again. Contact Podigee Support.

Clip actions:

* "Clip suggestions could not be created.": read the band under the message.
* "The clip could not be saved.": read the band under the message.
* "Check the times: write them like 1:30, with the end after the start.": correct the **Start time** and the **End time**.
* "The monthly clip allowance is exhausted.": you used all clips of this month. The band shows "The allowance resets on \[date]." or "More clips this month need a larger allowance." As the account owner, select **See plans**. As a team member, select **Ask \[owner]** or **Ask the show owner**. When the owner has no email address, no link shows.
* "Clip rendering could not start.": read the band under the message. When no band shows, the episode has no video. Create the moment again with an audiogram format.
* "This output is not ready yet.": the file is not rendered yet. Wait for the status **Ready**.
* The list shows "Automatic updates have paused. Reload the page to check again.": reload the page.

A clip with the status **Needs attention** shows one of these lines:

* "This episode has no video. Create this moment again as an audiogram.": create a new clip with an audiogram format.
* "Video formats cannot be rendered right now. Try an audiogram format, or try again later.": select **Render again** later, or create the clip with an audiogram format.
* "Rendering did not finish. Render it again.": select **Render again**.

The band under a message tells you what to do:

* "This episode has no recording yet.": add a recording in the classic view.
* "The episode content has not been prepared yet.": select **Prepare episode content**.
* "The episode content is still being prepared. Try again when it shows "Content ready".": wait until the pill shows **Content ready**, then try again.
* "Your plan or your access did not include this tool when it ran. Try again.": try again. If the **Create clips** card shows **Not available**, see the access messages above.
* "This is already being created. It appears here when it is ready.": wait. Do not start it again.
* "The service behind this tool did not answer. Try again in a few minutes.": wait a few minutes, then try again.
* "If it fails again, contact support.": try again. If it fails again, select **Contact support** to write an email to <support@podigee.com>.
