Use this task to decide how Podigee encodes the audio of your episodes. You set podcast-wide defaults one time on the **Audio** tab of the podcast. You can change them for one publication in the **Advanced options** of the publish dialog. ## Before you start * For the podcast defaults: you are the podcast owner, or you have permission to edit the podcast. * For one publication: you have permission to publish episodes. * The options that appear depend on the plan of the podcast owner. The encoding quality levels appear by plan level. The audio processing algorithms are available on every current plan (Launch, Starter, Grow, Scale, Creator, Pro, Enterprise, Broadcaster, Network), or on an older plan that includes them. Otherwise the dialog shows "Advanced configuration is not available with your plan." {% tabs %} {% tab title="Classic view" %} ### Set the podcast defaults 1. Open the podcast and select the **Audio** tab. The heading reads **Audio processing**. 2. Choose the **Encoding quality**. 3. Turn automatic transcripts on or off. 4. Choose the audio processing algorithms and their values. 5. Save the form. Select **Publish now\...**, **Schedule publication...**, or **Update Audio** on the episode. 2. Open **Advanced options** in the dialog. 3. Change the options for this publication. 4. Optional: select **Save as default settings** to store the options on the podcast. 5. Confirm the dialog. On the current plans, **Publish now** always uses the podcast defaults, sends an email notification, and creates a transcript. ### Reference: options | Option | Values and rules | | ---------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **Encoding quality** | **Normal (Stereo, optimized for conversation)**, **High (Stereo, optimized for shows with high musical content)**, **Super High (Stereo, optimized for perfect sound quality)**. **ICE portal** appears only when the plan includes it. | | **Notify me of publication by** | **Email**, **Desktop notifications**, both, or none. | | **Enable Automatic Transcription** | Creates a transcript when the encoding finishes. A warning tells you when Podigee will overwrite an existing transcript. On the current plans the option is on by default. | | **Leveler** | On or off. | | **Loudness normalization** | Normalizes the whole episode to the **Loudness target**, from **-13 LUFS (very loud)** to **-31 LUFS (very quiet)**. The target is required when normalization is on. | | **Filter** | On or off. | | **Noise and hum reduction** | On or off. The **Noise reduction amount** ranges from **Auto** to **100 dB (complete)**. The amount is required when the reduction is on. | The transcript option needs the transcript feature on the plan of the podcast owner. Otherwise the dialog shows "Automatic transcripts are available on eligible Podigee plans ...". See [Create and edit transcripts](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/episodes/create-and-edit-transcripts.md). ### Reference: output formats Podigee encodes episodes to MP3, AAC, Opus, and Vorbis. MP3 is the main format. See [Understand your RSS feed](/documentation/create-and-publish/publishing-and-distribution/understand-your-rss-feed.md) for the formats that the feed delivers. The sample rate is 44100 Hz. The channel layout follows the uploaded file. The table gives bitrates in kilobits per second (kbit/s). | Quality | MP3 (kbit/s) | AAC (kbit/s) | Vorbis (kbit/s) | Opus (kbit/s) | | ---------- | ------------ | ------------ | --------------- | ------------- | | Normal | 112 | 80 | 96 | 64 | | High | 128 | 96 | 112 | 80 | | Super High | 160 | 112 | 128 | 96 | | ICE portal | 112 | 64 | 96 | 64 | Loudness normalization uses a two-pass measurement. The default target is -16 loudness units relative to full scale (LUFS). The loudness range is 11 loudness units (LU), and the true peak is -1.5 decibels true peak (dBTP). The **Loudness target** that you select replaces the default target. Podigee stitches intro and outro segments into the encoded file. ### Expected result The next publication or audio update uses the chosen options. The media tab shows **Preparing audio files for publication** while Podigee encodes. A published episode offers **Download MP3** on the **Media Files** tab. ### If you cannot complete the task * A quality level or **ICE portal** is missing from the select: the plan of the podcast owner does not include it. * The dialog shows "Advanced configuration is not available with your plan.": upgrade the plan of the podcast owner, or publish with the standard processing. * The dialog rejects the loudness target or the noise reduction amount: choose a value from the list when the related algorithm is on. {% endtab %} {% tab title="Podigee workspace" %} In the Podigee workspace the processing options are podcast defaults on the **Audio settings** page. The workspace has no options for one publication. The publish page only asks for the publishing time. To change the options for one publication, use the classic view. ### Complete the task 1. Open the podcast and select **Settings** in the sidebar. Select **Audio**. The page **Audio settings** opens. 2. Under **Encoding defaults**, choose the **Audio quality**. The levels that appear depend on the plan of the podcast owner. They are named **Normal**, **High**, **Very high**, and **ICE Portal**. 3. Set **Generate transcripts automatically** to **On** or **Off**. 4. Under **Sound processing**, set **Balance speaker levels** to **On** or **Off**. 5. Set **Normalize loudness** to **On** or **Off**. When it is **On**, choose the **Target loudness** from **-13 LUFS (very loud)** to **-31 LUFS (very quiet)**. 6. Set **Reduce low-frequency rumble** to **On** or **Off**. 7. Set **Reduce background noise** to **On** or **Off**. When it is **On**, choose the **Noise reduction amount** from **Automatic** to **100 dB (complete)**. 8. The page says: "These defaults apply to future encodings. Saving them does not re-encode existing episodes." * The sound processing runs while Podigee encodes an episode. The page says: "These settings do not change episodes that are already published." ### If you cannot complete the task * A quality level is missing from **Audio quality**: the plan of the podcast owner does not include it. * The page shows "Automatic transcription is not available for this show's current plan." or "These sound-processing controls are not available for this show's current plan.": the plan of the podcast owner does not include the function. * Podigee shows "Audio settings could not be saved" with "Choose an available value for \[field].": choose a value from the list of the named field, then save again. * The dialog **Unsaved changes on this page** opens with "Saving here will discard your other audio changes on this page, including unapplied uploads.": you also changed the intro or outro on this page.
