# Replace or remove episode media

Publish new audio for a published episode, re-encode, remove audio, or download files.

Use this task to change the media of an episode after the first publication. You can publish a newly uploaded audio file, or run the encoding again with other processing options. You can also remove the uploaded audio, or download the files of the episode.

## Before you start

* You are the podcast owner, or you have permission to create and edit episodes. An audio update of a published episode also needs the permission to publish episodes.
* The 7-day rule for a new encoding: Podigee always allows a new encoding within 7 days after the last encoding of the episode finished. After 7 days, an older plan needs enough encoding minutes, and a current plan uses the encoding allowance of the plan. See [Understand plans and what they include](/documentation/connect-and-administer/account-and-team/understand-plans-and-what-they-include.md).

### Update the audio of a published episode

Use this path when you uploaded a new audio file to a published episode. Use it also when you want to change the advanced processing options of the publication.

1. Open the episode and select the **Media Files** tab.
2. If you have not uploaded the new file yet, upload it now. The tab then shows "You uploaded new audio file(s). Please use the update audio file feature to publish them."
3. Select **Update Audio**.
4. In the **Update audio file** dialog, review the advanced options. They are the same options as in the publish dialog. See [Choose audio processing options](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/episodes/choose-audio-processing-options.md).
5. Optional: select **Re-Upload YouTube Video**. Do this only when the audio changed a lot and you already removed the old video from your YouTube account. Podigee then exports the video again.
6. Confirm with **Update audio file**.

Expected result: Podigee shows "Audio processing has been started successfully." The media tab shows the encoding progress. The episode stays published with the previous audio until the new encoding finishes. The publication date and the globally unique identifier (GUID) of the episode do not change.

You do not need to update the audio after you change texts, keywords, chapter marks, or the cover image. Podigee writes changed metadata into the audio files in the background.

### Remove the uploaded audio

1. On the **Media Files** tab, select **Remove Audio**.
2. In the **Remove audio file** dialog, confirm with **Yes, remove it**. This operation is irreversible.

Expected result: Podigee shows "Removal successful". Podigee deletes the upload and its encodings. For a published episode the encoded files stay online. The tab shows "Your episode audio files are still published. To replace them, you can upload your new audio file(s)."

### Download files or copy the audio link

* **Download Original** downloads the file that you uploaded.
* **Download MP3** downloads the encoded MP3 file of a published episode.
* **Download Video** downloads the generated video of the episode when a video export exists. If the export failed, select **Try again**.
* The **Audio & Video** copy field on the media tab holds the public MP3 link of a published episode.

### If you cannot complete the task

* **Update Audio** is not shown: the episode is not published, or an encoding is running. Wait for the encoding, or publish the episode first.
* **Update Audio** is refused, or the tab shows "Minutes left are no longer sufficient for the encoding.": the 7 days after the last encoding have passed. The plan has no encoding minutes or allowance left. To check your plan and usage, open the user menu and select **My account**, then open the **Usage** tab.
* **Cancel encoding** stops a running encoding. The production returns to its previous state.
* A download reports "record not found": the file no longer exists. Upload the file again.
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="Podigee workspace" %}
In the Podigee workspace you work on the recording in the **Recording files** card of the episode page. The card covers part of this task. It hands out the files that Podigee stores, it replaces the recording with a new upload, and it removes the recording from a draft episode. The card has no audio processing options, and it refuses a change that the publication state does not allow. For these parts of the task, and for a published episode, use the classic view.

### Complete the task

1. Open the podcast and select **Episodes** in the sidebar.
2. Open the episode and go to the **Recording files** card.
3. To download a file, select its button, for example **Download MP3** or **Download original file**.
4. To replace the recording, select **Choose file** under **Replace the recording**.
5. Select a file in one of the formats **MP4, MOV, MP3, WAV, M4A or FLAC**.
6. Wait until the picker reads **Uploaded and ready to apply**.
7. Select **Replace the current recording with this file**.
8. Select **Apply new recording**.
9. To remove the recording, select **Remove recording** under **Remove the recording**.
10. Read in the dialog what Podigee deletes.
11. Confirm with **Remove recording**.

The Recording files card holds the download, replace, and remove controls of the episode recording.

### Expected result

* A download hands out the stored file. The card offers a button for each original file that Podigee stores, for the original video, and for the MP3 of the episode. An original that Podigee does not store, for example a file from another service or an import, has no button.
* After **Apply new recording**, Podigee shows "New recording applied. Processing runs in the background." The card then reads "Processing the new recording. This card updates itself." and refreshes itself until it reads "The recording is processed and ready."
* After **Remove recording**, Podigee shows "Recording removed." The card reads "No recording yet."
* A replacement and a removal keep the chapters, the transcript text, and the episode details. Podigee deletes the old file and everything that it processed from it.

### If you cannot complete the task

* "You cannot change the recording of this episode.": you have no permission to edit the episodes of this show. Ask the podcast owner for the permission.
* "Unpublish the episode before replacing or removing its recording.": the episode is published. Unpublish it first, or update the audio in the classic view.
* "Cancel the schedule before removing the recording.": the episode is scheduled. Cancel the schedule first. You can replace the recording of a scheduled episode without this step.
* "Cancel the pending publication before changing the recording.": the publication of the episode still runs on the processing. In the **Publishing status** section, select **Cancel schedule** first.
* "This episode has no recording to remove.": the episode has no file. Upload a file first.
* "Confirm the change before applying it.": select **Replace the current recording with this file** before **Apply new recording**.
* "Upload failed. Choose the file again to retry.": the upload did not finish. Select **Choose file** and upload the file again.
* "The uploaded file could not be used. Choose the file again.": select **Choose another file** and upload the file again.
* "The new recording could not be attached. Try again.", or a message that names the encoding allowance of your plan: Podigee refused the new file before it removed the current recording. The current recording stays in place. Check your plan, then repeat the replacement.
* "The new recording could not be attached and the previous one was already removed: this episode has no recording now. Upload a file again.": Podigee removed the old file before the new file was refused. Select **Choose file** and upload a file again.
* "The new recording could not be attached and the previous one was already removed: this episode has no recording now, and its schedule was cancelled so it does not go live without one. Upload a file again and schedule it anew.": the episode is a draft again. Upload a file, then schedule it again in the **Publishing status** section.
* "The recording changed since this page was opened. Reload and try again.": the recording changed in another tab or window. Reload the page and check the card again.
* "The last processing run failed. Replace the file to try again.": Podigee could not process the last file. Select **Choose file** and upload the file again.
* "There is no file to download for this episode yet.": the file is no longer there. Reload the page and check which downloads the card offers.
  {% endtab %}
  {% endtabs %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.podigee.com/documentation/create-and-publish/production/episodes/replace-or-remove-episode-media.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
