# Schedule or change an episode publication

Schedule an episode, change or cancel the publication, unpublish, and get notified.

Use this task to control when an episode is live. You can schedule a publication, move it to another time, cancel it, or take a published episode offline again.

## Before you start

* You are the podcast owner, or you have permission to publish episodes in the podcast. Without this permission the publish and unpublish buttons are disabled.
* Your subscription is in good standing (active, or with an open payment warning).
* The episode has an uploaded media file. See [Upload audio or video](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/episodes/upload-audio-or-video.md).
* A scheduled publication starts an encoding. The same 7-day encoding rule as for an audio update applies. See [Replace or remove episode media](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/episodes/replace-or-remove-episode-media.md).

### Schedule a publication

1. Open the episode and select **Schedule publication...** in the header.
2. In the **Publish episode** dialog, select **Schedule for later** under **Choose when to go live**.
3. Set the date and time under **Pick your publication time**. The dialog proposes the end of the next full hour.
4. Under **Notify me of publication by**, choose **Email**, **Desktop notifications**, both, or none.
5. Optional: change the **Advanced options**. See [Choose audio processing options](/documentation/create-and-publish/production/episodes/choose-audio-processing-options.md).
6. Confirm the dialog.

Expected result: Podigee encodes the audio now. The header button reads **Publishing in progress** while the encoding runs. When the encoding is complete, the episode shows the **Scheduled for publication** state. The sidebar shows the time under **Will publish at**. Podigee publishes the episode at the chosen time.

### Change the publication time

1. Select **Change publication...** on a scheduled or published episode.
2. Pick the new time.
3. Confirm the dialog.

When you move a published episode to a future time, the episode goes offline until that time. Podigee removes it from connected platforms.

### Cancel a scheduled publication

1. Open the **Media Files** tab while the encoding runs.
2. Cancel the publication. Podigee shows "The encoding is finishing, but the episode won't get published automatically."
3. To stop the encoding itself, select **Cancel encoding**.

Expected result: the episode returns to the **Not published** state. You can publish it again at any time.

### Unpublish a published episode

1. Select **Unpublish** in the episode header.
2. Read the dialog: "Unpublishing the episode means it won't be accessible to your listeners." and "You can publish the episode again later."
3. Confirm with **I understand, unpublish**.

Expected result: the episode shows **Not published**. Podigee removes it from the feed and from connected platforms. The media file and the episode details stay in place.

### How Podigee notifies you

* The notification goes to the person who started the publication.
* For **Email**, you receive an email with the subject "\[episode title]" from "\[podcast title]" is live. The email links to the episode, its analytics, the exports, and the public episode page.
* For **Desktop notifications**, your browser shows a notification.
* When the publication fails, Podigee always sends an email to the person who started it. The subject reads "\[episode title]" was not published, and the email names the scheduled date when there was one.
* Episodes that an import publishes send no notification.
* On the current plans, **Publish now** always sends the email notification.

### If you cannot complete the task

* **Schedule publication...** is disabled during a Dropbox transfer: wait until the transfer completes.
* A limit dialog replaces the buttons. Either you reached the episode publish limit of your plan for the billing period, or the podcast is over the podcast limit of the plan. See [You reached a plan limit](/documentation/connect-and-administer/troubleshooting/you-reached-a-plan-limit.md).
* "This episode already counts toward your billing period ...": you cannot move a published episode into another billing period on a plan with a publish limit.
* "Minutes left are no longer sufficient for the encoding." or the banner "You have exceeded your monthly minute quota.": an older plan has no encoding minutes left. Upgrade the plan or wait for the next quota period.

In the Podigee workspace you control the publication in the **Publishing status** section of the episode page, and on the publish page that this section opens. The workspace schedules a draft, moves a schedule, cancels a schedule, and takes a published episode offline. It has no notification options, it has no audio processing options, and it cannot move a published episode to a later time in one step. Use the classic view for these parts of the task.

### Complete the task

1. Open the podcast and select **Episodes** in the sidebar. Open the episode.
2. Go to the **Publishing status** section of the episode page. The section shows the state of the episode and the control that matches this state.
3. To schedule a draft, select **Publish or schedule**. The page **Choose when this episode goes live.** opens.
4. Check the details under **Review** and the **Publish readiness** list. Each item must show **Done**.
5. Select **Scheduled** under **Publishing time**.
6. Enter the date and time under **Schedule for**. The button changes to **Schedule episode**.
7. Select **Schedule episode**.
8. Confirm the question of the browser. The question tells you that the episode publishes automatically at the selected time.
9. To move a scheduled publication, select **Change the schedule**. The publish page opens with the current publication time.
10. Repeat step 6 to step 8 with the new time.
11. To stop a scheduled publication before it goes live, select **Cancel schedule**.
12. To take a published episode offline, select **Unpublish**.
13. Read the consequence in the dialog that opens.
14. Confirm with **Cancel schedule**, or with **Unpublish episode**.

The publish page reviews the saved details and lists what the episode still needs before it can go live.

The publish page of a published episode carries the control that takes the episode offline below the details.

### Expected result

* After a schedule, Podigee shows "Episode scheduled." and opens the episode page. The **Publishing status** section reads **Scheduled for** with the chosen time.
* After **Cancel schedule**, Podigee shows "Schedule cancelled. The episode stays a draft." The state reads **Not published**, and nothing is deleted.
* After **Unpublish**, Podigee shows "Episode unpublished. It is a draft again." The episode leaves the feed and the website, and connected platforms are asked to take it down where supported. Downloads and statistics stay.
* The section offers **Publish or schedule** again for a draft. You can publish the episode again at any time.
* After you unpublish an episode, you can replace or remove its recording in the **Recording files** section. Podigee refuses both actions while the episode is published.
* Cancel the schedule before you remove a recording. Podigee refuses **Remove recording** for a scheduled episode.
* The **Recording files** section shows **Download original file** only for an original file that is stored at Podigee. It reads "There is no file to download for this episode yet." when the episode has no file to hand out.
* The publish page has no notification options. See [Get notified when an episode goes live](/documentation/create-and-publish/publishing-and-distribution/get-notified-when-an-episode-goes-live.md) for the ways to get notified.

### If you cannot complete the task

* The button is disabled with "Processing is still running. The publish button unlocks when the file is ready.": Podigee still processes the recording. Stay on the page. The page reloads itself until the button unlocks.
* The button is disabled with "Publishing unlocks when the checklist is complete.": an item of the **Publish readiness** list is **Needed**. Complete it first.
* Podigee shows "Choose a future date and time before scheduling.": the **Schedule for** field is empty. Enter a date and time.
* Podigee shows "Choose a scheduling time in the future.": the entered time is in the past. Enter a later time.
* Podigee shows "Add a title and description before publishing.": select **Edit details**, fill both fields, and select **Save changes**.
* Podigee shows "Publishing will finish after processing completes.": the schedule was accepted before the processing was complete. Podigee completes the publication after the processing.
* The section shows "You cannot change the publication of this episode." in place of the control: you cannot edit episodes in this podcast. Ask the podcast owner for the permission.
* Podigee shows "Confirm the change before applying it.": the confirmation did not reach Podigee. Open the dialog again and confirm it.
* Podigee shows "This episode is not published or scheduled.": the episode is already a draft. There is nothing to withdraw.
* Podigee shows "The publication state changed since this page was opened. Reload and check again.": somebody changed the publication while the page was open. Reload the page, read the state again, and repeat the action.
* Podigee shows "The publication could not be changed. Try again.": nothing was changed. Repeat the action.
* The state reads **Processing, then publishing** and the section offers no **Publish or schedule**: the publication already runs on an unfinished processing. Select **Cancel schedule** to stop it.
* The page shows "This episode is already live.": the episode is published. To move it to a later time, select **Unpublish** first, then schedule it again. To move it in one step, use **Change publication...** in the classic view.
