# Understand how episode content and ad delivery work together

Learn how episode recordings, chapters, intros, outros, trailers, ad breaks, RSS, and dynamic ad delivery stay connected without mixing editorial content with commercial delivery.

The Podigee Audio Video Ad Server uses the episode that you already manage in Podigee. It does not create a second monetization copy of the episode. The episode, its media, and its RSS entry remain the content authority.

Monetization adds controlled ad-break positions and request-time ad delivery around that content. This separation protects editorial work, keeps the feed stable, and prevents editorial audio from being counted as an ad.

## The parts of an episode presentation

Each part has a different purpose.

| Part | Purpose | Commercial effect |
| --------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Program recording** | The main audio or video that the audience selected. | Editorial content. It is not a billable ad. |
| **Chapter marker** | A label and source timestamp that helps a listener find a moment. | Navigation metadata. It is not an ad break or impression. |
| **Intro** | Optional show audio before the main program. | Editorial content. It has no ad tracker or billable effect. |
| **Outro** | Optional show audio after the main program. | Editorial content. It has no ad tracker or billable effect. |
| **Trailer episode** | A published episode whose type is Trailer. | Episode content. It is not an ad creative only because it promotes the show. |
| **Ad break** | An approved position where one or more ads may run. | A delivery opportunity. The break itself is not billable. |
| **Ad creative** | The audio or video advertisement selected for a request. | Commercial media. Its qualified delivery can create measurement and revenue evidence. |

If you want to use a promotional recording as an advertisement, add it as a Creative and assign it through a Campaign or house-promotion rule. Do not use an episode trailer as a substitute for an ad Creative.

## The saved content order

Podigee keeps editorial components and commercial positions in this order:

1. A before-episode ad break, when configured.
2. The editorial intro, when the episode uses one.
3. The main program recording, including any during-episode ad breaks.
4. The editorial outro, when the episode uses one.
5. An after-episode ad break, when configured.

The intro and outro are optional. They are recorded as editorial parts of the presentation and remain non-billable.

## Chapters and ad breaks use the program timeline

Chapter markers and ad-break positions refer to the main program recording. Podigee does not add an intro duration or an inserted ad duration to the saved source position.

For example, a chapter at 00:08.500 and a during-episode break at 00:05.000 both describe moments in the original program. The ad can change by listener request, but the saved editorial boundaries do not move.

*Edit the episode content in Podcast and use the same episode context to inspect Monetization readiness.*

When you replace the source recording, the earlier break binding no longer proves the position in the new media. Rebind and review the affected placement against the current audio or video.

## Audio and video belong to one episode

One episode can have an audio source, a video source, or both. Podigee keeps the editorial episode identity shared, but it verifies each exact media source separately.

* Audio and video can have different durations.
* A shared during-episode position must be inside both selected sources.
* An approved placement stays tied to the exact source that the reviewer inspected.
* A source replacement can make only the affected media binding stale.
* Podigee uses only components that are compatible with the delivery surface.

For example, an audio-only intro or outro is not inserted into a video HLS presentation as if it were video. Podigee excludes an incompatible editorial component instead of creating an unverified video presentation.

![The One Podigee episode preview shows video and audio playback beside publishing and ad-break readiness.](https://2032417310-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FbqUKO6lljHGzkEAzliPI%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5ac2c94067a25b80bd45d3c93ee669ba2a2364d3%2Fdoc-monetization-029-episode-preview-and-delivery.jpg?alt=media)

*Preview the audience media and confirm that the same episode is published and ready for Monetization.*

Podcast mode keeps a direct link to the Monetization context. From the episode view, select **Review monetization setup** to inspect the exact break and delivery readiness for this episode. This link keeps editorial and commercial work in one One Podigee application without creating a second episode record.

*Use the episode context to move to Monetization without losing the editorial source.*

## The RSS feed remains the episode authority

Podigee continues to publish the existing show RSS feed and episode entry. Activating the Podigee Ad Server does not create a separate feed for the same episode.

For eligible public audio delivery:

1. The RSS episode keeps a stable media address.
2. Podigee resolves that address to the active verified episode version.
3. A listener request receives the eligible presentation for that request.
4. Decision, delivery, cache, analytics, and revenue evidence refer to the same result.

During preparation, listeners stay on the current verified source. Podigee does not switch the RSS media address to a prepared replacement until that replacement becomes active. Private, ad-free, or not-yet-activated delivery keeps its applicable existing route.

## What happens when episode content changes

Different changes have different effects.

| Change | What Podigee does | What you check |
| ------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Title, description, or other episode metadata** | Creates a new exact episode content version while keeping the public episode address stable. | Confirm publishing and delivery readiness. |
| **Chapter marker** | Records a new ordered chapter snapshot on the program timeline. | Confirm the timestamps and check whether the episode needs a delivery refresh. |
| **Audio or video source** | Creates a new exact media version. The earlier source remains current until the replacement is ready. | Preview the new media, rebind stale breaks, and review affected placements. |
| **Intro or outro** | Creates a new editorial composition for episodes that include the component. It remains non-billable. | Confirm the selected episodes and compatible delivery surfaces. |
| **Publication time** | Applies the exact publication boundary. A scheduled episode does not become public early. | Confirm the date, time, and readiness before publication. |
| **Unpublish** | Removes the episode from current public supply and revokes its delivery authority. | Check affected Inventory packages, Campaigns, and forecasts. |

A content change does not silently rewrite a booked Campaign. If the eligible supply changes, an earlier forecast can become stale. Calculate a new forecast before you change a reservation.

## What happens during republishing

Podigee prepares a successor version and keeps the active version available while the successor is checked.

1. Save the episode change in **Podcast**.
2. Wait for any required media processing.
3. Preview the current audio and video.
4. Check **Ad breaks and monetization** for items that need review or a refresh.
5. Select **Manage ad breaks** and correct only the affected placements.
6. Complete the applicable review rule.
7. Confirm the episode publishing state.
8. Recheck Inventory and forecast state when the sellable source changed.

The active listener response stays on one verified version. Podigee does not combine old program media, new chapters, and unrelated ad-break bindings in one response.

## Delivery does not change editorial ownership

Podcast producers continue to own episode content decisions in **Podcast**. Ad operators use **Monetization** to control the commercial opportunities around that content.

* Producers manage the recording, episode type, metadata, chapters, and publication.
* Producers and authorized reviewers decide where commercial breaks are safe.
* Ad operators manage slots, Campaign eligibility, Creatives, targeting, pacing, and fallback.
* Podigee verifies the exact content and commercial versions before delivery.

This division lets one person perform both roles in a small operation. Larger teams can separate the roles without creating duplicate episodes or conflicting timelines.

## If content and delivery do not agree

* **A break needs refresh:** Open Break Canvas, bind it to the current media, audition it, and review the new exact placement.
* **Chapters appear at the wrong moments:** Check that their timestamps refer to the original program recording, not to an intro or an inserted ad.
* **Audio and video do not share a safe position:** Use separate placements or move the shared position inside both source durations.
* **An intro or outro is missing from video:** Check whether the component has compatible video media. Podigee does not convert audio-only editorial content into video automatically.
* **A changed episode is not active yet:** Wait for processing and verification. The prior verified source remains active during preparation.
* **The RSS feed still resolves to the earlier version:** Check the episode delivery state. Podigee switches only after the successor is active.
* **A trailer was counted as advertising:** Check whether it was incorrectly uploaded as a Creative. An episode with the Trailer type remains editorial episode content.

## Result

The original Podigee episode and feed remain the source of truth. Editorial components stay separate from billable ads, chapter and break positions stay tied to the program timeline, and republishing replaces one verified version with another without mixing delivery state.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.podigee.com/documentation/grow-and-monetize/monetization/understand-how-episode-content-and-ad-delivery-work-together.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
